EUDR software: 12 questions to ask before you choose

There are dozens of EUDR tools and almost all of them promise compliance. These questions separate the ones that solve the real problem, the data for every plot at origin, from the ones that only organise what others send them.

Updated 10 October 2026
Good EUDR software gets origin data you can defend: the geolocation of every plot, verification against sources anyone can check, and evidence for each shipment that nobody can alter afterwards.

The origin data

  1. Does it capture data in the field, or only receive what the supplier sends? Geolocation only exists at origin; if nobody records it properly there, no system can fix it later.
  2. Does it work without signal? Many coffee and cocoa plots have no coverage.
  3. Does it require a polygon for plots over 4 hectares and check the GeoJSON against TRACES rules? Six decimals, closed polygons, no holes or crossings.

The verification

  1. Which sources does it check deforestation against? Ask whether it uses the EU reference map (JRC 2020) and whether you can see each source.
  2. Does it distinguish a doubtful signal from confirmed deforestation? And whether it allows field substantiation with photos and GPS.
  3. Does it cover legality or only deforestation? The regulation requires both.

The shipment

  1. Does it bring together in one shipment all the plots the product comes from? A container usually mixes dozens of farmers.
  2. Does it separate flagged plots without mixing them? The regulation does not allow a problem plot to be offset by clean ones.
  3. Does it deliver a TRACES-ready GeoJSON or connect to the official web services?

The evidence and the service

  1. Can you prove the dossier was not modified afterwards? For example, with a digital fingerprint anyone can verify.
  2. Where is the evidence kept, and for how long? The operator must keep it for at least five years.
  3. Who provides support at origin, and in which language? The field technician and the European buyer rarely speak the same language.

How Origen answers

Origen captures data in the field on a phone, even without signal, with a polygon for plots over 4 hectares. It checks against four open satellite sources, including the EU's JRC 2020 map, marks plots clean, review or deforestation, and allows substantiation with stamped photos. It consolidates each shipment, separates flagged plots and delivers the TRACES-ready GeoJSON with a dossier anyone can verify by its SHA-256 fingerprint and Bitcoin timestamp. Support in Spanish and English.

FAQ

Does EUDR software certify that I comply?

No. No software or certificate replaces the operator's due diligence. What it does is gather and organise the evidence so the statement can be filed and defended.

What matters more, the map or the field data?

The field data. The satellite map can only check the plot someone recorded properly at origin.

Do I need software if mapping plots is already free?

Free mapping tools help, but the buyer needs more: documented verification, the list of plots in each shipment and evidence that cannot be altered.
